About the Farm

Kula Mana Farms is a permaculture farm using regenerative agricultural techniques to cultivate Kona coffee and macadamia nuts. Our farm is a mixed tree farm, hosting a variety of species including papaya, avocado, pineapple, banana, and of course, coffee and macadamia nut trees. The abundance of various trees contributes to the biodiverse properties of the farm. The coffee cherry is able to thrive in the shade, with the many trees acting as protectors from drought and flooding.

The soil of the farm is part of what makes it so special. The entirety of the Big Island is made up of volcanic rock. In most parts of Kona, this rock is nearly infertile. The decomposing plant matter from our diverse variety of trees and plants creates a nutrient rich layer of soil atop the lava rock. Plant biodiversity anchors the soil to the ground, minimizing erosion and exposed rock which would otherwise lead to infertility.

Kula Mana Farm is a historic Japanese coffee and macadamia nut farm, nestled on the western slopes of Mauna Loa in the Kona coffee growing region of Hawai’i.

Farmed since 1919, the steep slopes resist mechanization, but reward the hand labor of our guests.
